A plumbing estimate template earns its keep on exactly the jobs where plumbing pricing goes wrong: the ones where you can’t see the problem until you’re in the wall. A clear estimate with stated assumptions lets you give the customer a real number on the spot — and revise it without a fight when the “simple leak” turns out to be galvanized pipe from 1962.
When Plumbers Should Estimate Instead of Quote
Fixture swaps, water heater replacements, and standard installs have known scope — quote them at a fixed price using the plumber quote template. Diagnostic work, leak repairs, drain problems, and anything in finished walls deserves an estimate with conditions. The customer hears a number either way; the difference is what you’ve committed to — quote vs estimate, explained.
What to Include in a Plumbing Estimate
Job Identification
- Business name, license number, insurance, and contact details
- Customer name and service address
- Estimate number, date, and validity window
- Reported problem and what you observed on inspection
Line Items
| Item | Qty | Unit Price | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service call / diagnostic | 1 | $95 | $95 |
| Labor — repair supply line in wall | 3 hrs | $110 | $330 |
| Parts — PEX, fittings, shutoff valve | 1 | $85 | $85 |
| Drywall access cut (patch by others) | 1 | $60 | $60 |
| Permit (if required) | 1 | $120 | $120 |
Note the “(patch by others)” — putting wall repair explicitly out of scope is the kind of one-line exclusion that prevents hundred-dollar arguments.
Assumptions and Conditions
- Pricing assumes accessible shutoffs and standard pipe materials
- Concealed damage, corroded or non-code existing work priced as a revised estimate before proceeding
- Estimate valid 30 days; emergency rates differ
Terms
- Payment due on completion for repairs; deposit for installs over a threshold
- Warranty on labor (state the months) and manufacturer warranty on parts
- Approval signature line — especially for work authorized on site
Pricing Plumbing Work Profitably
- Charge for diagnosis. Finding the problem is skilled work. Roll the fee into the job if they proceed — but never make it free.
- Use your real hourly cost. Truck, tools, insurance, licensing, callbacks, and non-billable drive time all live inside your rate. Most underpriced plumbers are charging wage, not rate.
- Price parts at retail. Your markup covers stocking, sourcing, and warranty — supply-house cost is not customer cost.
- Put revision triggers in writing. “If we find X, the price becomes a new estimate” turns surprises into process instead of conflict.
Send It Before You Leave the Driveway
The plumber who hands over a clean, itemized PDF on site — or texts it within the hour — converts at a different rate than the one who says “I’ll get you something this week.” Start from the free estimate template or build your plumbing estimate in OfferKit and send it from the truck.
